Ultimate Ears UE FITS
There’s nothing quite like the pure and simple joy of running. The opportunity to explore a trail, a city, the mind, or to tune it all out and just be with the rhythmic beat of your footsteps. Sometimes, though, you want that playlist or podcast to keep you company during a challenging workout or long run. For those times, it’s critical to have headphones that don’t distract from the innate beauty of the run.
For this reason, I’ve been on the hunt for the ultimate headphones for running—for anything from HIIT to ultramarathons. I’ve tried models from nearly all reputable brands, including Apple, Beats, Bang & Olufsen, Sony, Jabra, and Jaybird, but they’ve all suffered from one or more of the same nagging issues, typically around fit (comfort and retention) and/or sound quality.
Enter Ultimate Ears UE FITS. Their promise of at-home custom-molded ear tips sounds gimmicky and too good to be true, but they deliver. The molding process is straightforward and effective, resulting in truly custom-fit tips that eliminate pressure hot-spots and stay in place for hours without any adjustment. Further, these don’t rely on foams to seal the ear canal for optimal sound quality, so you don’t get that pressurized thumping sound with every footstrike. Rather, the molded shape does an excellent job of passive noise isolation and produces clear and balanced sound for music and podcasts. While these may not be the best sounding earbuds (I’d have to hand that to Bang & Olufsen E8 Sport), UE FITS’ comfort and secure fit, combined with solid sound, great connectivity, and intuitive controls have made them my go-to buds for several months (including a recent 40-mile 40th Birthday run).
